Description
The former poorhouse, including Aros Cottage and the boundary wall, is located at the Argyll and Bute Health Board Headquarters on Blarbuie Road in Lochgilphead. Designed by David Crow in 1861, this two-storey building features a symmetrical, gabled design with 13 bays and long two-storey wings to the north, forming a U-plan. The structure is constructed of random rubble with contrasting smooth ashlar margins and quoins, and includes a band course. Some areas have simple timber bargeboarding and bracketed timber eaves, with a mix of single and bipartite window openings. The wings are finished with concrete harl.
The principal elevation faces south and has an advanced central section with three bays, including a further advanced gabled entrance bay. The entrance features a two-leaf timber door with a fanlight above, flanked by bays with tripartite window openings. The outer sections are recessed and consist of five bays, with advanced gabled central bays.
Inside the courtyard, the south elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central lower gabled extension with advanced wings. The building has predominantly single- and four-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and corniced ridge and gable stacks. The interior has been comprehensively altered to accommodate office spaces as of 2012.
Aros Cottage, located to the north within the courtyard, is a single-storey, six-bay structure made of rubble with smooth margins and bracketed timber eaves. It also features predominantly four-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate roof with gable stacks. The property is enclosed by a coped boundary wall to the south, which includes a central path.
