Description
5 Buccleuch Street in Hawick is an early 19th-century, three-storey and attic terraced building with 11 bays, arranged in a 4-3-4 configuration. The ground floor features shops, while the upper floors contain flats. There is a segmental-arched pend entrance on the left side, two rooflights for No 1, three canted dormers for No 3, and two canted dormers for No 5. The building is constructed from roughly squared, coursed whinstone with yellow sandstone ashlar dressings and raised margins, while the rear is rendered.
The shopfronts have a continuous plain corniced fascia, with a cill course at the first floor for Nos 1 and 3, and a corniced, consoled fascia for the shop front at No 5. There is an eaves course and a continuous moulded cornice above the eaves across the entire range. Plain pilasters flank the doorway to No 3, while No 5 features rusticated pilasters on the ground floor.
The shopfronts use plate glass, some of which include vertical glazing bars. The upper storeys have timber sash-and-case windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The building has coped, rendered gablehead stacks with circular clay cans, a grey slate roof with a metal ridge, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
