Description
2 Howegate in Hawick is a terraced tenement building from the earlier 19th century, which was redeveloped by Aitken & Turnbull in the late 20th century. It stands three storeys high and has three bays, situated on a sloping site. The ground floor features a pilastered shopfront made of painted ashlar, while the upper storeys are constructed from squared, snecked whinstone, accented with yellow sandstone ashlar dressings. The rear of the building is harled.
The building has a deep base course and a corniced shopfront with a fascia, along with an eaves course and raised quoin strips. The front has a regular arrangement of windows, each with raised ashlar margins and projecting sills, while the rear displays irregular fenestration. The shopfront includes a deeply recessed door flanked by large windows, with a blind opening to the outer left.
The shop windows are made of plate glass, and the other windows throughout the building predominantly feature 12-pane glazing in timber sash-and-case style. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is a coped, rendered stack with circular clay cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
