Description
7 Howegate in Hawick is an early 19th century building that was redeveloped by Aitken & Turnbull in the late 20th century. It is a two-storey and attic, three-bay terraced block situated on a sloping site, featuring a central canted dormer and a steeply pitched roof. The ground floor has smooth painted render, while the first floor is made of painted rubble with painted droved ashlar dressings. The rear is rendered with raised painted margins. There is a cornice at the ground floor and an eaves course. The building has narrow raised quoin strips that it shares with No 5 to the left.
The principal elevation has an asymmetrical three-bay ground floor with a timber panelled door and fanlight to the right. The first floor has regular fenestration with projecting cills, while the rear displays irregular fenestration, including timber boarded doors on the left and right, and a gabled dormer on the outer right.
The windows predominantly feature 12-pane glazing in timber sash-and-case style. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a metal ridge. A coped, rendered stack with circular clay cans is present, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
