Description

Century House is a possibly later 18th century building with later additions and alterations. It is a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay house with a lower wing at the rear, forming an L-plan, and a further single-storey addition beyond it. There is also a single-storey block attached to the northwest, creating a near U-plan. The exterior is made of harl-pointed sandstone rubble, with predominantly droved sandstone dressings, quoins, long and short surrounds to openings, and projecting cills. The property includes a walled garden that encloses a near rectangular-plan site.

The south (entrance) elevation features bays grouped towards the centre. There is a step leading to a deep-set timber panelled door at the centre of the ground floor, which has a plain surround and a geometric-patterned fanlight above, along with a bracketed pentice canopy. Single windows flank the entrance on the ground floor, and there are single windows in all bays on the first floor.

On the east (side) elevation, the principal gable end is to the left, with single windows on both floors to the right. The lower wing is attached to the right and has a two-leaf glazed door at the ground floor, with a gabled dormer head above that breaks the eaves for a single window. There is also a single window in the single-storey block attached to the outer right.

The north (rear) elevation has a blind elevation to the principal block on the right. A gabled wing projects to the left, with a further single-storey wing attached to the front. There is a single window in the projecting single-storey, mono-pitched block attached to the outer right.

The west (side) elevation features the principal gable end to the right, with single windows on both floors flanking the centre. A single-storey, mono-pitched block is attached to the left, which has a door at the centre and a single window to the right. A two-storey wing is set behind, with a single-storey wing attached to the outer left.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with 4-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and has stone-coped skews, with brick-built apex stacks and circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1999.

The walled garden is a four-sided enclosure with squared coping on tall rubble walls to the north and east, featuring rounded corners to the northeast and a swept edge to the southeast. The north side has a red brick inner lining. The remaining sides are enclosed by lower, rubble-coped walls. There is an entrance in the east wall with a round-arched opening and a boarded and studded timber door.
