Description
The Bull Inn, located at 7 New Street in Paisley, is a four-storey and attic tenement building designed by architect W D McLennan in the Art Nouveau style between 1900 and 1901. The ground floor features a public house, with an entry to the upper floors marked by an unusual arch and sidelights, which are flanked by wide segmental arches filled with glazed bricks, dark wood, and stained glass. The outer bays of the first floor have canted windows, which rise to the third floor on the right with wide eaves, and to the second floor on the left, where there are quadripartite windows that extend to the third floor and bipartite windows leading to the attic, all recessed in a round arch with a shaped gable above.
The inner bays are asymmetrical, featuring bipartite windows on each floor of the left bay and bowed windows in the right bay, capped by a conical slated turret. A corbelled stack is located at the centre of the building, and there is a fine projecting sign supported by brackets, along with two iron brackets over the right ground floor bay.
Inside the public house, the original Art Nouveau fittings are preserved, showcasing dark wood and white painted woodwork, a tiled fireplace, a counter and gantry, and glazed partitions that create some separate enclosures.
