Description
Nethercommon Carpet Works, located at 16 Inchinnan Road in Paisley, is a factory designed by architect T G Abercrombie and completed in 1912. This building showcases a simplified Italianate style, constructed from red brick with decorative white brick bands and patterns.
The factory features a three-storey, 16-bay angled west elevation. The three northern bays are designed symmetrically, with a wide central bay that is recessed under a segmentally-headed arch. This central bay is flanked by recesses with flat-headed bays. The outer piers are corbelled out at the ground floor and have machicolations near the top, giving them a turret-like appearance, with windows on the first and second floors.
The ground floor openings have been altered, with a door located in the left bay. The first-floor glazing has also been modified, while the second floor retains its original cast iron small panes. The building has a stepped parapet that rises to a gablet above a carved datestone.
The remaining 13 bays are treated similarly, with 12 wide segmentally-headed windows and one narrow flat-headed end bay. The gabled two-bay rear elevation is designed in the same style, and the corner turrets are blind.
