Conservative Club, 24-26 New Street, Paisley

The Conservative Club, located at 24-26 New Street in Paisley, dates back to around 1800 and was altered in 1883 for use as a club, with further additions and alterations made in 1892 by T. G. Abercombie. This symmetrical building features two storeys and five bays, with single-storey quadrant wings. The front is made of ashlar and includes angle pilasters, with the central bay set slightly forward. There is a base course, and simplified Corinthian pilasters flank a recessed door that has a fine fanlight above it, supported by a fluted frieze and cornice. A rosetted band course runs over the four outer bays. The glazing consists of later plate glass sashes. Above the first floor, there is a string course and a debased Doric frieze over the central bay and angle pilasters. The eaves cornice features a blocking course that is raised over the center. The roof is slate with straight skews and end stacks. The wings have pilasters at their ends, cornices, and blocking courses raised at the center, along with pilastered round-headed windows set in architraves. Additionally, there is a cast-iron standard lamp on pedestals flanking the steps to the door, designed by Abercombie.
