Description

Erskine Hospital is a building dating from 1856, possibly designed by William Burn, featuring Tudor architectural elements. It is a single storey structure with a loft, arranged in an E-plan. The exterior is constructed with stugged courses and finely stugged contrasting dressings. The main court is highlighted by a central wide gabled pend arch and a slim square clock tower that rises from the roof platform. The clock tower has a low corbelled top stage with gablet belfry windows on each face, a truncated broach spire, and a weathervane.

Flanking the main court are three cartsheds, and the returning wings feature four windows and a central door with corbelled ledges leading to gablet loft doors. There is a low front screen wall with a central gate flanked by square gatepiers. The north elevation includes gablets at the centre and ends, along with a monogram panel above the pend. Some original glazing remains intact.

The east court is smaller and lower, with farm workers' cottages located on its eastern side. It features two bipartite gablet dormers and a door to the right. The roofs throughout are slated and supported by stone brackets, adorned with stepped copings, finials, and square stacks set diagonally. A ramped formal approach leads to the main court, which includes a depressed gothic arch at the centre, above a brick vaulted chamber that serves as an icehouse.
