Description
Erskine House is a large neo-Tudor mansion built between 1826 and 1828 by Sir Robert Smirke. It features two storeys and a basement, constructed from ashlar stone. The exterior is characterized by ogee-capped octagonal angle buttresses and arcaded parapets, along with low-pitched slated roofs and shafted chimneys. The entrance front faces east and is asymmetrical, highlighted by a boldly projecting arched and vaulted porte-cochere of giant proportions, and Jacobean shaped gables on the southern section of the facade.
The southeast service wing is two storeys tall, with a lower storey that connects to the basement, creating an L-plan forecourt. The northern and southern elevations form an elongated U-plan; the northern elevation has 11 bays set on an elevated terrace with cusped arcading. The central three bays are three storeys high and feature a projecting porch, while the broad end bays have five-light canted bays and two broad projecting ends. The windows are a mix of two and three light mullioned and transomed designs.
Inside, the mansion boasts significant architectural features, including a high rising entrance hall of Fonthill type, a rib-vaulted hall corridor, and richly detailed principal apartments. Notable interior elements include a fan-vaulted drawing room, original chimneypieces, and high-quality light fittings. The first floor has undergone considerable alterations.
