Modern Gothic Summer House, Tyninghame House

The Modern Gothic Summer House at Tyninghame House dates from around 1830 and features alterations and additions by architect William Burn. It was originally part of an earlier service court and now forms an enclosed courtyard accessed through a gateway at the northeast. The structure is built of random rubble with ashlar dressings and consists of three adjoining symmetrical gabled blocks, each two stories high. The first-floor windows break the eaves, and the central block is taller than the others. The gables have crowstepped dormer heads and skews, and two doors have been inserted into the façade.

On the northeast elevation, there is a full-height gabled projection at the center of the outer right block, while the center block is blank. The outer left block features a central ground floor window flanked by a segmentally arched recess, and there are three dormer windows on the first floor.

The west gable includes a square tower that is corbelled above the skewputt level, featuring a blank circular panel within a square surround and a clock with Roman numerals above. A circular window is located on the north side, mirrored by a single-storey gabled block that adjoins at a right angle to the southwest. The roof is swept pyramidal with gabled ventilators and an attenuated finial.

There are single-storey lean-to outbuildings on the west range, with some doorways altered to windows, and coal sheds with a lean-to roof on the north range.

Additionally, there is an 18th-century square-plan water tower with a pyramidal roof, located next to the north range of outbuildings by the entrance gates. It features a doorway and an opening at ground level, along with a small eight-pane window above and a finial.

The sash and case windows have a small-pane glazing pattern, and the building is covered with grey slates and has gable end stacks.
