Description
West Lodge, Ferntower, is a lodge house built in the late 18th to early 19th century, with extensions by Mills & Shepherd in 1938. It is a single-storey building with a piend roof and gothic details, constructed from rubble and lined render, featuring droved ashlar dressings.
The south elevation has a projecting bay on the left with a canted window at the center, where each face includes a pointed-arch opening topped with a gablet head. The center gablet displays a high relief carved coat-of-arms with the words 'VIVE UT VIVAS', flanked by heraldic beasts and surmounted by a crown. To the right, there is a lower blank bay.
The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a modern porch to the right of center, a window to the outer right, and two windows to the left.
The east elevation features a stepped design with a piended bay to the left of center, which includes a pointed arch window in the lower projecting gable. There is a door in the re-entrant angle to the right and a small window in the recessed face. A later set-back bay to the outer right has a window to the left and a timber-mullioned bipartite window to the right.
The north elevation is blank.
The windows are timber sash and case with a 8-pane glazing pattern, as well as Y-traceried pointed arch windows. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there is a coped ashlar center stack with cans.
The boundary walls and gatepiers consist of low saddleback-coped rubble walls with cylindrical gatepiers topped with ball finials.
