Description
Millhill Steading and Horsemill is a large agricultural building complex from different periods. It features a U-shaped court from the late 18th century on the south side, which has a later first floor. To the north, there are L-shaped wings from the early 19th century, along with a later covered court and a now-ruinous horse-mill next to the wheel chamber on the west side. The east elevation includes late 19th century additions. The structure is built of rubble masonry with ashlar dressings, and the earlier parts have stugged and margined dressings with chamfered openings. The later bays on the east side have concrete walls and margined openings. The roofs are a mix of slate, pantile, and corrugated metal. There are boarded timber doors and timber louvred openings for the granary.
On the east elevation, the late 18th century range is on the left, featuring a later elliptically-headed cart arch and a pentice-roofed addition that projects to the left. To the right, there are three late 19th century piend-roofed bays with doors and a cart arch. Further right, there are three additional bays, with the left gable having an elliptically-headed cart arch and a hayloft door above. The right side has a recessed piend-roofed bay with a large cart arch, and the far right gable from the early 19th century has a sliding door and a window above.
The north elevation is in a ruinous state. The west elevation features the ruinous horse-mill in the center, which is next to the earlier wheel chamber that still has its wheel intact. There are blank bays to the left and a range to the right with six granary openings.
The south elevation has advanced gables on the left and right, with blocked keystoned elliptical arches and round hayloft openings above. Both gables have been heightened, and the right gable has been widened. The left return of the right gable includes a later addition with various openings, while the right return of the left gable has six segmental-headed cart arches, a hayloft door, and five granary openings. The recessed central range has various doors, three granary openings, and two hayloft doors.
Inside, the fittings for the cattle court remain intact.
