Description

Stanley Mills East Range, built around 1823 to 1855, is a combination of one- and two-storey buildings with an attic, constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings. The structure features linking passages at the first floor and attic, extending from south to north.

The two-storey and attic section, possibly used as a hand mule room or for hand looms, consists of ten bays, which have been extended by three bays to the north. The west elevation has two ground floor doors and one first floor door, which were originally windows. The east elevation features a three-storey piend roofed hoist tower to the south, supported by cast-iron brackets, with a later brick lift shaft in the south gable. A composite timber and iron trussed gangway connects to the bleach works and is partially boarded at the center of the first floor.

To the north, there is a warehouse that is one storey with an attic, featuring two large round-arched doors on both the east and west elevations. Smaller doors lead to a small workshop at the south end, and there is a round-arched door with a hoist door above it in the north gable.

Inside, the buildings have timber floors supported by length-wise beams. In the two-storey section, there is a central row of vertically interconnected cast-iron columns with flanged capitals that support twin beams, along with two additional rows of timber props at the ground floor. The ceilings have bobbins to direct belting, and the attic is plastered with collar beams. The warehouse attic is similar, with a single row of cast-iron columns on the ground floor.
