Description
Balhary is a classical building designed by John Carver of Kinloch between 1817 and 1821. The main block, completed in 1817, is a two-storey structure in an L-shape, built with stugged ashlar stone. The northeast entrance front features three windows, with a central tripartite arrangement and a single-storey tetra style portico in antis. The central pair of columns is slightly advanced and designed in an unfluted Doric order with banded necking. The southeast front includes a central canted bay, flanked by two windows on either side, with the end bays also advanced. An earlier basement has been incorporated into the design. There is a single-storey north wing on the northeast front, connected by a two-window link to a pavilion that has a segmentally arched tripartite window. Additionally, there is a quadrant plan office court with screen walls, which dates to 1821. The building remains unaltered.
