Description
Balmakewan House, built around 1825 to 1830, is a two-storey building with a basement, constructed from ashlar stone. It has a rectangular plan and features a five-window front, with the central bay being slightly advanced. The entrance is marked by a Greek Doric column doorpiece, and there is a segmentally arched recess above the central first-floor window. The ground floor windows are architraved and topped with cornices. The flanking sections of the house have a plain four-window design without architraves. Inside, there is an impressive central hall with a top light, although it has been significantly altered in the late 19th century and again more recently.
