Description
30-32 Alfred Street and Slipway in Stromness is a late 18th to early 19th century fishing station, which has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring a six-bay rectangular plan that is asymmetrical. The exterior is harled, and it has small upper floor windows.
On the north (principal) elevation, there is a boarded door at ground level in the central bay, with a window above it. To the right, there is a window on each floor, and a two-leaf boarded door with a non-aligned window above in the penultimate bay. There is a louvered opening on the upper floor to the outer right, and a window at each floor in the bay to the left of centre. A small opening is located between the floor levels in the penultimate bay to the left. There is also a window in a lean-to addition on the outer left and a two-leaf timber door on the right return.
The south (rear) elevation is irregularly fenestrated and features louvered openings at the west end. The building has fixed timber-framed windows and louvered openings. The roof is covered with replacement grey slate, has a stone ridge, and features replacement concrete skews. The harled corniced ridge stack and gablehead stack are located to the west, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The slipway consists of a cement-covered rectangular-plan open yard between the ranges, with a cement-covered slipway running through it, likely underlain by flagstone slabs.
