Description

Garth Farm, located in North Breck, is a small farm steading built in the mid-19th century. It is a single-storey, three-bay structure arranged in an L-plan, featuring a three-bay byre and a lean-to shelter that forms the short arm of the L. There is also a detached two-bay byre or barn positioned parallel to the rear of the main building, which is set on ground that slopes down to the east. The farmhouse has a harled exterior, while the outbuildings are constructed from rubble.

The south elevation, which is the principal facade, has a deep-set boarded door with a blocked letterbox fanlight in the central bay. There is a boarded window on either side of this door. The east and west side elevations each feature a small window, offset to the south, with a gablehead stack above. The north elevation, or rear, has a small window set high in the central bay. The pitched byre projects north from the outer right bay, with the west elevation displaying a centrally located boarded door and a small window in each flanking bay, along with the lean-to shelter on the outer right.

The windows are boarded, 12-pane timber sash and case style. The main block is covered with grey slate, has a stone ridge, and features concrete skews and harled corniced gablehead stacks. The projection has collapsed Caithness flagstones, while the shelter has turf over Caithness slates.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.

An ancillary structure includes a single-storey, two-bay barn or byre with a lean-to entrance on the outer right side. This structure has boarded doors in each bay and a centered boarded door on the rear elevation, with turf covering a Caithness slabbed roof.

Additionally, there are rubble garden walls, which are largely collapsed, enclosing a rectangular garden area in front of the main house.
