Description

45-47 John Street in Stromness is a mid-19th century, two-storey and attic house with a near-symmetrical, three-bay rectangular plan. The building is harled and features ball-finialled gabletted dormers, situated on a steeply rising ground to the west, with a base course.

The east elevation, which is the principal facade, has a stone step leading to a modern part-glazed door located in the central bay, with a window above it on the first floor. To the left, there is a window on each floor, along with a dormer window above. The right bay contains two closely set windows at ground level and a window on the first floor, with a dormer window above.

The north side elevation features a single bay gabled wall with an attic window to the left of the gable and a gablehead stack above it. The windows are two-pane timber sash and case, and there is a rooflight positioned between the dormers. The roof is covered with modern fishscale grey slate, has a red clay ridge, and concrete skews. The building has tall, harled corniced gablehead stacks on both the north and south sides, along with uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
