Description
Balgray Cottage is a single-storey, three-bay cottage built in 1767, as indicated by a dated skewputt. The cottage has undergone out-of-character alterations around 1980. It features straight skews and bold, scrolled skewputts, along with oversized continuous box dormers on both the front and rear, and enlarged window openings.
To the left, there is a single-storey wing that has been modified with enlarged and later openings, a blocked central door, and a later doorway on the gable, which has a triangular doocot above it. The exterior is constructed of random sandstone rubble with dressed margins and a cavetto moulded eaves course.
On the northwest (rear) elevation, there are additional lean-tos and enlarged openings. The original timber sash and case 6 and 8-pane windows have been replaced with UPVC glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are harled end stacks with circular clay cans.
The interior was not seen in 2003, but it appears that nothing original remains.
