Description

This is a single-storey barn dating to 1797. It is constructed of rubble and includes an arched opening to the south, which may have originally been a cart-shed and is now blocked. A large rectangular opening to the right has later metal sliding doors, with a dated lintel above. Ventilation slits are present on all elevations, and a blocked door is on the north side. The roof is pitched and covered with corrugated iron.

Inside, the barn has a solum floor and a timber roof structure, with remnants of limewashed surface on the walls.

The barn is prominently situated at a bend in the road and represents a good example of an 18th century farm building with limited alteration. The lands of Balgray were historically part of the Hessilhead estate, within the Barony of Giffen, and were owned by the Montgomeries in the 16th century. In the early 18th century, John Stevenson and John Muir were associated with the lands. Historical maps indicate that the barn, along with Balgray Cottage (a separate listed building), was part of a larger group of farm buildings that survived until the mid-20th century. Originally, the barn likely had a thatched or slated roof, with the corrugated iron being a 20th century replacement in a vernacular style. The traditional lime mortar remains, though the lime harl which would have covered the building has disappeared over time. The barn was marked as 'Bagraw' on Andrew Armstrong's map of 1775 and John Ainslie's map of 1821, and 'Balgrays' on John Thomson's map of 1822. It is also shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1858.
