Stonyholm Mill, Kilbirnie

This is a 19th-century mill complex constructed of rubble stone with ashlar dressings. The west elevation features a symmetrical, three-storey, nine-bay block dating from the mid-19th century. The central three bays project slightly and are topped with a pediment containing an oculus. A continuous eaves course runs along the top, and the roof is covered in slate with a piended design. A set of railings and tall gate piers flank the blocked entrance to the left. A lower, gabled block from the mid-19th century connects to a taller, five-storey, four-bay gabled block. The ground floor windows were originally round-headed, with a matching door to the right and a blocked pend in the screen wall. The fifth floor (attic) has two windows below a blind oculus and a gable-head stack. The south return elevation has three bays, all windows now blocked, and eight bays in a recessed five-storey block built in 1831. The engine house, dated 1870, is located to the east and is characterized by tall, round-headed windows and a tall brick chimney. A free-standing block to the east, built in the mid-19th century, is three storeys high with 14 bays and two projecting bays on the west elevation. Slate roofs are consistent throughout the complex.
