71 Main Street, Kilbirnie

This is an earlier 19th-century building located at 71 Main Street, Kilbirnie, and also addresses 67 and 69 Main Street. The building is two storeys and an attic, with a basement level. It presents a symmetrical facade constructed of ashlar stone, with polished dressings. A central recessed three-centred arched pend, featuring pilastered jambs and a fanlight within an architrave, is topped by a consoled pediment. This pend is flanked by wide doors and shop windows, all framed by moulded architraves. The door on the left side also has a fanlight. A continuous band course runs above the ground floor, and a moulded cill course sits below the first-floor windows. Four first-floor windows are present, retaining their original 12-pane glazing within lugged architraves. Large, prominent outer pilasters support a main entablature and a blocking course. The roof is slated, with end stacks punctuating it. A central box dormer has been added, considered an unfortunate alteration.
