Description

23 Quarry Road in Irvine is a mid-19th century house featuring a single storey and attic, with an asymmetrical plan that includes a three-bay main section, a single storey wing at the rear, and a single storey block extending to the side and rear. The front is constructed from squared, coursed, and painted rubble stone, while the sides and rear are made of snecked rubble stone. The building has a base course, eaves band, cornice, and blocking course, with plain margins.

The southeast elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a deep-set central entrance with convex jambs and a rectangular four-pane fanlight. Flanking the entrance are ground floor windows, with canted and piended dormers above, and an additional flat roof dormer situated between them. To the left, there is a piended single storey addition, a stone mullioned bipartite window in the center, and a door to the right.

The southwest elevation features a gable end with an advanced single storey addition and three windows in the wall. The northeast elevation also has a gable end with windows on both the left and right sides. The northwest elevation shows the gable end of the advanced wing on the left, which includes a garage door, while the main house has a doorway and window to the right, adjacent to an outhouse and conservatory that are not included in the listing. The gable end of the single storey addition to the right has a door that is offset to the left.

Modern plate glass windows have been installed, and the roof is covered with replacement dark grey slate. The building features stone skews and ashlar gablehead stacks. The boundary walls are made of painted rubble stone. The interior was not seen during the 1997 assessment.
