Description

These are late 18th or early 19th century former stables, forming a U-plan around a square-plan courtyard, with a walled enclosure to the northeast. The stables are predominantly single-storey, although there is a two-storey range to the west. They are constructed of rubble with smooth margins, with a rendered elevation to the southwest. The building features rectangular and some segmental-arched window and door openings, some of which have been filled in. Piended dormers project from the roofline on the southwest side. A coped rubble wall extends to the northeast, incorporating a central opening flanked by gatepiers. The northeast wall has raised margins.

Internally, the stables have been comprehensively altered. They now provide office space, storage, and a social club. The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with 6-over-6 panes. The roof is covered in grey slates with raised skews, and a brick ridge stack is present.

The stables are situated close to the associated Perceton House (listed separately) and are considered a good example of a late 18th or early 19th century courtyard stable block. The buildings retain their original plan form and roofline.

Perceton House was built around 1770 by William Macredie, whose family had previously acquired the land and an earlier house in 1720. The original Perceton House was demolished to make way for the current building. Ownership passed through several families before the house’s sale to the Irvine Development Corporation in 1968. The stables were likely built around 1770 in conjunction with the house.
