Description
Kirktonhall House is a tall three-storey house located on Main Street in West Kilbride. The building is harled with grey-painted stone dressings and features a battlemented parapet that displays the date 1807. There is another datestone near street level with the initials R.S. and M.W. from 1660. The principal facade faces the garden at the rear and includes a central projecting two-storey porch, which has a Gothic Palladian window on the first floor and a lower stage supported by corner columns. The lintel of the porch is inscribed with "Rebuilt by Frank Ritchie 1791." The house has a long three-window facade, a ridge roof with large Victorian dormers, and plain gables. To the left, there is a lower addition featuring a bay window. Dr. Robert Simpson, known for translating Euclid, was a native of West Kilbride, and his family lived at Kirktonhall for several generations.
