Description
The gatepiers and gates, including the boundary wall, at Overton Church (Church of Scotland) on Ritchie Street were designed by Hippolyte J Blanc in 1883. This Gothic church features a gabled, six-bay structure with buttresses and a prominent square-plan tower topped with a polygonal spire at the northwest corner, along with a single transept on the southwest side. The building is constructed from squared and snecked rock-faced red sandstone with smooth margins, and includes a deep base course and moulded string courses, as well as some hoodmoulding. The windows are a mix of pointed-arch and rectangular styles, with two-light windows featuring circular openings above on the side elevations and a three-light window on the transept gable. A later gabled church hall, added in 1912, is located at the rear.
The northwest (street) elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing a gabled design with an advanced gabled porch on the left. This porch features a recessed, moulded, pointed-arched entrance with two-leaf boarded timber doors adorned with decorative iron hinges. Above the entrance is a central rose window with a Celtic cross at the apex. To the right stands the four-stage, angle-buttressed tower, which has a tall, polygonal spire with lucarnes and a finial. Miniature square-plan angle towers with pyramidal stone roofs and blind openings are present at the third stage. The top stage of the belfry is dentilled and features deep-set, round-arched openings with continuous hoodmoulding.
The boundary wall, gatepiers, and gates are made of squared and snecked rock-faced sandstone with coped walls that step down to the street. There is a pair of gatepiers with Gothic capstones at the northwest, along with decorative metal gates. The church predominantly has fixed leaded pane or stained glass windows, with graded green slates and red ridge tiles.
Inside, the church has a fine and cohesive interior featuring a curved timber boarded roof with rafters that spring from stone corbels. The furnishings include timber pews, an en-suite communion table, a pulpit, and a font. There is a timber gallery on the northwest side with a half-glazed screen beneath, which contains coloured and leaded glass. The interior also features some fine commemorative stained glass windows depicting mainly Biblical and local scenes.
