Description

The lighthouse on Eilean Mor in the Flannan Isles was designed by engineer David Alan Stevenson in 1899 and built by George Lawson from Rutherglen. It was automated in 1971. The structure features a battered, circular, three-stage tower and a single-storey, flat-roofed, L-plan keeper's house that hugs the base at the northeast corner, situated on a steeply sloping site. The exterior is made of whitewashed squared rubble with raised margins, base eaves, and blocking courses.

The lighthouse stands 23 meters tall. The first stage is tall and has a blocked opening at the ground level, a part-blocked opening about halfway up, and a window near the top. A corbelled walkway leads to the second stage, which has modern steel railings, a row of small glazed portholes, and a door. Above this is a narrower pierced cast-iron decking topped with a lamp featuring diagonal astragals and a ball-finialled domed cap with a weathervane.

Inside, there is a serpentine cast-iron staircase with a timber handrail, and the boarded timber deck is supported by iron girders resting on fluted pilasters, with timber-moulded porthole openings.

The keeper's house has a principal south elevation with three windows in an advanced section and a modern gantry that supports solar panels. There is a recessed entrance bay with a door and window. The north elevation features a door and three windows, while the east elevation has a door and a window.

The boundary walls and gatepiers are made of saddleback-coped, snecked roughly squared rubble and random rubble, with pyramidally-coped square-section gatepiers.
