38-40 Cromwell Street, Stornoway, Lewis

32, 34, and 36 Cromwell Street is a three-storey tenement block with shops on the ground floor, built in two stages. The first part, which is a symmetrical three-bay range closest to the south, appears to be from the late 19th century. A full-height two-bay extension adjoins the north gable and closely replicates the original detailing. The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, features apex stacks, and has slate roofs, although some parts may now be partly tiled.

At the rear, there have been alterations, including a flat-roofed centre outshot and a forestair, both likely original. The original range includes two shops at ground level, with a modern shop front on the left. The first floor has four single windows, with the original sash windows on the left. The second floor features arched windows, with a bipartite window in the wide centre wall-head gable and single outer windows that break through the eaves, topped with arched dormer heads.

The addition has a shop on the ground floor and a pedestrian pend, with two bays above. The shallow-arched second-floor windows extend into the wide centre gable.
