Description
West Lodge at Aberlour House was designed by A and W Reid in 1856 and features an Italianate style. This two-storey lodge has an asymmetrical three-bay entrance front. The exterior is harled, with tooled and polished ashlar dressings and margins.
The entrance is gabled and pilastered, located in the outer single-storey bay on the southwest side, which also includes a canted single-storey balustraded window to the left. Above this, there is a round-headed bipartite window with blocked imposts on the first floor. At the northwest angle, a three-stage tower is defined by giant angle pilaster strips with ashlar margins, featuring round-headed keystoned arched windows on each face at the third floor. The ground and first floors are lit by corniced lancet windows, and the lodge has a shallow pyramidal slate roof with an apex finial and bracketed eaves. There is also a rectangular projecting window with similar detailing to the front, located within the re-entrant angle of the tower facing north towards the road. The windows have lying-pane glazing, and there is a coped wallhead stack.
The late 19th-century gatepiers and gates consist of a pair of tall rusticated ashlar piers with egg and dart detailing at the base of the cornice, topped with attenuated swagged finials and fluted urn bases. The entrance features a pair of ornate cast and wrought-iron carriage gates, along with flanking cast-iron spearhead railings that incorporate a pedestrian entrance with a decorative overthrow. A simple terminal pier is located to the west.
