Description

Michael Kirk is a small church built in 1705, which was restored and had its interior refurbished by John Kinross between 1900 and 1901. The church features a Gothic style and is constructed of ashlar stone. It has three bays and large pointed windows with elaborate Y-tracery in the east and west gables. The south entrance has a central door flanked by windows, with reveals that include half-round and fillet moulding decorated with stairs and roses. The flanking windows also have Y-tracery and deeply moulded architraves, and there is a continuous string course that drops under the cills. The windows are made of square clear glass quarries, and the roof is steeply pitched with West Highland slate, featuring stone ridges and apex urns.

Inside, the church is panelled throughout, dating from the 1900-01 refurbishment. It contains various mural memorials, including one for Sir Robert Gordon, who died in 1704, possibly carved by John Faid from Elgin, along with memorials for other Gordons and Gordon Cummings. The floor is made of chequered black and white marble.

The burial ground is enclosed by simple stone walls and has low, coped, square dressed rubble gatepiers at the east and west entrances. The western gatepiers feature inset re-used 17th century carved detailing.

There is also a market cross type located in the burial ground, which has a tall rectangular shaft with chamfered and stopped angles. It includes an incised hammer mark and a hole that was likely used for jougs. The cross has a small star-shaped finial with a central hole and stands on a simple square stone plinth.
