Description
The Lady Macpherson-Grant Hall, likely designed by A Marshall Mackenzie around 1871, is a T-plan building originally constructed as a school and schoolhouse. The main hall is a single-storey, three-bay rectangular structure facing east. A single-storey and attic dwelling projects at a right angle from the west elevation, while a two-storey drum tower stands in the northwest re-entrant angle, featuring an entrance at its base.
The building is constructed of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. A central gabled porch on the east elevation has a pointed-headed entrance flanked by windows featuring a central wooden mullion. Three long, pointed-headed windows are found in the north gable, and a matching pair of windows appear in the south gable. The windows have decorative honeycomb glazing. A plank door is fitted with local wrought iron decorative hinges.
The entrance to the dwelling has a similar door and a single flanking window. A dormer window is present on the south elevation, and the windows throughout the dwelling are 4-pane. A stack with crowsteps is located at the end of the building. The roofs are slate, with fishscale slates covering the conical tower roof. Historical records, including a report in the Elgin Courant from August 4, 1871, document a bazaar held at Ballindalloch Castle to raise funds for the proposed school.
