Description
South Lodge, built in 1850, is an example of Scottish Baronial architecture. It is a three-story, slender rectangular lodge, originally a single bay, with a projecting stair tower rising to its full height at the southwest angle, and a gate arch springing from the east elevation. The lodge is harled with tooled and polished ashlar dressings and margins. A doorway is located in the east elevation, sheltered by the thickness of the archway, with matching doors across the drive leading to a store. The doors are studded plank with decorative wrought-iron hinges. A small window is located in the northeast corner at ground floor level. A corbelled wallhead encircles a crowstepped caphouse at the second floor, with access to the wallhead from the stair tower. Small, round pepperpot bartizans are located at the northeast and southeast angles, while square, open bartizans are situated at the northwest angles. The windows have multi-pane glazing, and the end stacks have moulded copes. The roofs are fish-scale Banffshire slate covering bellcast turrets, with similar slates on the caphouse.
The round-headed gate arch has a crenellated overthrow. It is surrounded by moulded detailing and nailhead ornamentation, flanked by dummy shot holes (likely formerly housing bellpulls). A coat of arms is set within a square plaque with a cable moulded border above the archway (on the south side), and a monogram appears on the north side. A pair of iron gates, designed to fit the shape of the round-headed archway when closed, are also present.
