56-58 South Street, Elgin

56-58 South Street in Elgin is a building designed by Charles C Doig in 1894, with alterations to the ground floor shop front also by Doig in 1962. This classical structure features three storeys and an attic, with a total of seven bays. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with rubble flanks. It has a central door topped by an open pediment, flanked by six shop fronts that have alternate channelled piers, along with a continuous fascia and cornice. The centre three bays are defined by flat giant pilasters, and all windows are adorned with moulded architraves, which are lugged and corniced on the first floor. The cornice and die parapet are interrupted by three pedimented dormers. Additionally, there is an octagonal turret with a leaded bell-cast roof at the bowed angle facing Culbard Street. The elevation on Culbard Street is similar in height and consists of six bays.
