Description
The Carlton Hotel, located at 63-67 High Street in Forres, was designed by architect Peter Fulton in 1900. This building features three storeys and an attic, with a three-bay facade facing High Street and a curved angle bay at the corner of High Street and Caroline Street, which includes the entrance.
The exterior is constructed of bullfaced rubble with tooled ashlar dressings and has a harled west gable. The ground floor has two shop fronts. On the first floor, there are canted oriel windows in the outer bays, each with wallhead balconies that overlook substantial four-light mullioned round-headed windows on the second floor. The angled bay has similar window designs, but features a tripartite arrangement on the second floor.
The High Street frontage is adorned with two shaped finialled gablets, which are supported by large scroll brackets, and the windows have two-pane glazing. A finialled leaded dome crowns the angle wallhead, and there are end stacks on the slate roof. The ground floor shop fronts along the High Street have been modernized.
