Description
The Royal Hotel, located at 1 and 3 Bath Street in Aberdeen, dates back to 1879. This four-storey building with an attic is situated on a curve of the street and features a prominent semi-octagonal angle topped with a tall facetted fishscale slate roof. The roof includes two tiers of dormers and a crowning cupola ventilator.
The facade facing Bath Street has six bays, with an off-centre wallhead gable that encloses a small bipartite window and an apex stack, along with three dormers. There is also a small quadrant that faces Windmill Brae. The side facing Bridge Place has four stepped bays and a wallhead gable. The exterior is constructed of stugged granite with finely tooled dressings, while modern doors have been installed.
The windows on the ground and first floors consist of corner bipartite windows supported by cast-iron columns, while all other windows are single-light with rounded upper angles, featuring sash and case designs with plate glass. A corbelled shallow parapet completes the building, which is topped by a slate roof.
