Description
44 Bridge Street is a monumental, classical commercial building designed by Ellis & Wilson in 1881. It is a four-storey, 15-bay structure built from granite ashlar, arranged in a U-shape with a symmetrical principal elevation facing Bridge Street. The central three bays rise to five storeys, while the rear features two-storey and attic wings facing Crown Street. The ground floor includes shops with some banded rusticated pillars, although the frontages have been modernised and altered in 2006. A blind balustrade separates the ground and first floors, and there are band courses and a balustraded parapet on the east and south sides, decorated with palmette motifs.
The principal elevation on the east side features three central bays divided by four giant pilasters, which are fluted at the lower section and rise from the first to the fourth storey, topped with distinctive Papyrus capitals. The top storey is separated by squat, paired pilasters with Egyptian-style detailing, which are capped with palmette motifs. There is a small central pediment, and the flanking bays are also separated by similar giant pilasters that clasp at the corners. The fourth storey includes some bipartite windows with Doric mullions and architraves.
The building displays a variety of window styles, predominantly featuring plate glass timber sash and case windows on the upper storeys, along with some non-traditional pivot windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a shallow pitch, with coped gables and ridge stacks. The interior has been extensively altered as of August 2006.
