Description
The Walled Garden and Garden Cottage at Letterfourie House date from 1770 to 1780 and are situated on a south-facing sloping site. The garden features large rectangular rubble walls, which are lined with brick on the southern aspect of the northern wall, and have a tooled ashlar coping with polished ashlar dressings.
In the middle of the northern wall, there is a wide, projecting garden room or orangery with a pediment, consisting of five bays and curved angles. The entrance has a doorway with a radial fanlight and flanking windows, along with additional windows in each bowed angle, all featuring multi-pane glazing. The southern aspect of the garden room is defined by two wide segmental-headed arches, although the original roof is missing.
The southern wall of the garden includes a wide round-headed entrance with a keystone. Incorporated into the northern wall is a later two-storey, three-bay house, which is partially brick and partially harled, with windows that open into the garden and feature two- and four-pane glazing. The house also has two later dormers, brick end and wallhead stacks, and a slate roof.
The approximate measurements of the walled garden are 73 by 117 yards (66 by 107 meters), with a wall height of 20 feet (6 meters).
