Description
St Ninian's Church in Tynet is a simple, long, low single-storey building constructed in 1755, with renovations in 1787 and the early 20th century, and restored in 1951. Designed by architect Ian G Lindsay, the church features a 10-bay south elevation with regular window placement, harled walls, and ashlar dressings. The entrance is a plain square-headed doorway located in the second-to-last southwest bay, with an additional doorway to the sacristy at the eastern end. The north elevation has six windows, primarily with 12-pane glazing. A ball finial from around 1787 crowns the west gable, and there is a stack at the east gable, topped with a graded Banffshire slate roof.
Inside, the church has a simple whitewashed interior. The principal doorway leads into an entrance lobby, which includes a baptistry separated by flat balustered railings. The doorway to the main church is framed by a possibly reused corniced doorpiece with fluted Corinthian engaged columns and is closed by a pair of 18th-century fielded panelled doors that have modern partial glazing. The interior also features simple grey painted pews and a confessional. The chancel is separated by turned altar rails and is framed by reeded pilasters that support a simple wooden arch. A small octagonal pulpit from 1787 is present, complete with an octagonal sounding board, fielded shaped panelling, and moulded cornices.
