Description
This is an early to mid-19th century cottage, built as a single storey with a three-bay design, and a rear wing that creates an L-shaped plan. The walls are of clay and bool construction, with the front surface harled and the rear surface limewashed. A gabled timber porch is located centrally, and a door is positioned on the south elevation. The rear wing is flanked by small windows with replacement glazing, while other windows feature four panes. The chimney stacks have been renewed. The cottage has a thatched roof with a raised and scobed thatch ridge.
The cottage is noteworthy as one of a small number of traditional buildings in Scotland that retain a thatched roof. A 2016 survey by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) identified approximately 200 such buildings remaining, primarily in small rural communities. These buildings are traditionally constructed, reflecting distinctive local building methods and materials, and are important for understanding traditional skills and earlier ways of life.
The statutory address is Loch Na Bo Croft. Further information can be found in a 1970 article by A. Fenton on clay building and thatch, and in a 2016 SPAB survey of thatched buildings in Scotland. A 2018 report from Historic Environment Scotland provides additional context.
