Description

Dated 1826, South Gate Lodge is a single-story, two-bay building. It is constructed of tooled rubble with dressed stone details. Features include strip quoins, a moulded eaves course, a blocking course, and timber mullions and transoms.

The east (principal) elevation is asymmetrical, with two bays. A polished ashlar doorway is on the left, featuring a moulded architrave surmounted by a pediment that breaks the eaves, and a panelled timber door. To the left of the doorway is an eight-pane, two-leaf casement window with a moulded architrave surround.

The north elevation has a single bay, with a central tripartite window framed by a moulded architrave. There is a smaller window to the left, a dividing band course, and a carved panel in the gablehead reading “P.D. 1826” (Phillip Dundas).

The west elevation is asymmetrical with a two-bay, flat-roofed, harled addition from the 20th century projecting to the left. It has two eight-pane sash and case windows. A narrow, round-arched window is located in the bay to the right.

The south elevation is largely obscured by a rubble-walled courtyard with droved margins and semi-circular coping. A boarded timber door is off-centre to the left. A George V (1865-1936) wall letter box of Type "C," made by T Allen & Co., London, is set in the right return wall, and corrugated iron roofing covers parts of the courtyard. A dividing band course is also present.

The glazing patterns vary, and the roof is covered with graded grey slate and lead ridges, with moulded ashlar skews. An ashlar ridge stack with a pair of flues linked by a cornice has replacement circular cans. Cast iron rainwater goods are also present.

The lodge is contemporary with the West Lodge. The statutory address is Arniston Policies, South Lodge.
