Description
The Old Meal Market Inn, located at 2-4 St Andrew Street in Dalkeith, dates from the late 18th century. It is an irregular group of two-storey buildings arranged in a rectangular plan, which have been combined into a single property. The structure features two gabled ranges facing west along South Street, with a gabled jamb forming an L-plan to the east. The exterior is harled with raised painted margins.
On the west elevation facing St Andrew Street, the lower left gable has a door to the right and three windows that are irregularly placed, with two located on the first floor. The right gable is angled slightly to the south and also has three irregularly placed windows, with one on the left side of the first floor.
The south and west re-entrant elevations feature a two-bay south elevation with regularly spaced windows, including a broad window on the left at ground level and a smaller window on the right at the first floor. There is a lean-to porch, replacing a former forestair, with a cat-slide roof extending south in the re-entrant angle. The porch has a door on the left side of the west face, with a window above and to the right. The west re-entrant elevation includes a door and a window above it, as well as a window on the left side of the south-facing gablehead of the jamb.
On the east elevation, there is a window on the right at the first floor, which is interrupted by a transverse cartshed range extending eastward. The building features a variety of small-pane glazing patterns in replacement sash and case windows, coped skews, and gablehead stacks, with a modern pantile roof.
