Description
27 High Street in Dalkeith is an early 19th-century, three-storey, five-bay Georgian tenement that features two shops on the ground floor, which have now been combined. The building is constructed of finely droved ashlar, with a painted channelled ground floor, while the remaining elevations are harled. It has a base course, a band course between the ground and first floors, a cill course at the first floor, and raised cills at the second floor. The eaves cornice and blocking course are slightly raised over the central bay.
On the south street elevation, there is a corniced twin doorpiece with Ionic columns, leading to two recessed modern shop doors. Broad multi-pane slightly bowed shop windows flank each side, and original iron canopy fixtures are present. An iron bracket for a hanging sign is located to the left. The first and second floors feature regular fenestration, and there is a rendered and lined strip beyond the downpipe on the outer right.
The southeast elevation is acutely angled and blank. The rear elevation features a square stair tower at the center, with a door to the south and a window to the east above a modern single-storey addition. There are windows at the first and second floors in the bay to the left.
The north elevation is adjoined to No 21 South Street. The building has a 12-pane glazing pattern in the sash and case windows, while the east elevation has a modern glazing pattern. The roof features coped skews, a broad mutual stack with No 21 South Street to the north, grey slates, a small rooflight on the west pitch, and two dormer windows on the east pitch. The original rainwater goods and a recessed downpipe to the right are also present.
Inside, there is a cast-iron balustrade in the stair tower.
