Description
21 South Street in Dalkeith is an early 19th-century, three-storey Georgian tenement. The building features five bays that are grouped towards the center, with a shop occupying the ground and first floors. The ground floor is finely droved ashlar, painted and channelled, while the other elevations are harled. It has a base course, a broad lintel course at the ground floor, and a narrow cill course at the first and second floors, along with a lintel course at the eaves level.
On the west elevation facing South Street, there is a modern shop door at the center, flanked by four modern plate glass windows. The first and second floors have regular fenestration, though the window in the bay to the right of center is blind.
The north elevation features a two-bay lop-sided gable that is partly visible from High Street. It has regular fenestration with larger windows at the ground level, although the right window is slightly out of line to the left.
The east (rear) elevation has a broadly chamfered right corner. There is a door with a six-pane fanlight and a window to the first and second floors on the right. A circular stair tower is located to the left, but it is now partially obscured by surrounding buildings, with a door facing north. This stair tower is connected to the east by a modern single-storey block.
The south elevation is adjoined to Nos 23 and 25 South Street, which have separate listings. The sash and case windows feature a 12-pane glazing pattern. The skew on the left is harled, and there is an irregular base to the stack on the north side, along with a broad mutual stack shared with Nos 23 and 25. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes two small rooflights on the west pitch. The original rainwater goods are intact, with a recessed down-pipe on the right.
