Description

The Sugar Warehouse at James Watt Dock on East Hamilton Street in Greenock was built around 1885. It is a long warehouse featuring a high first storey, constructed of red brick with yellow brick detailing in the form of arches, pilaster-strips, and window-margins.

At the west end, there is a 4-storey and loft block that is 7 bays wide, with the bays separated by pilaster-strips. The central bay includes doors at the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th levels, with a hoist positioned above. To the east of this block is a 2-storey range that has 18 bays, where the windows are arranged in recessed arches in 9 pairs, each pair topped with a gable that contains a circular window.

Further east, there is another 4-storey block that is also 7 bays wide, followed by a 2-storey range that is 22 bays wide, with windows grouped in 11 pairs, and the eastern end featuring 6 recessed arches. The gable ends of the 4-storey blocks are adorned with 8 stepped recessed arches.
