Description
The Upper Pump Room at Strathpeffer is a rambling, single-storey building dating to circa 1860, with enlargements circa 1890 and completed around 1909. It is constructed from coursed rubble with tooled dressings. The building features a square entrance bay with a pyramidal roof, featuring barge-boarded dormers on three sides and a small, round wooden cupola. Flanking halls are characterised by tripartite windows, and a further entrance has a glazed door with flanking lights. Oval "bulls' eye" windows are set within the gables. The building is roofed with shallow slate and incorporates an arcaded verandah at the north-east angle.
Inside, the halls are lined with tiles. The present central car park occupies the site of a former, earlier principal pump room, which was originally known as the Upper Pump Room.
References to the building appear in Fortescue Fox's 1925 edition of Strathpeffer, D. Nanson’s 1869 publication “On the Sulphur Waters of Strathpeffer”, and Ordnance Survey maps from 1876 and 1906.
