Description
This is a late 19th-century, 1888, Gothic church built for the Church of Scotland in Strathpeffer. Constructed from rough-faced rubble stone with contrasting polished ashlar dressings, the church is a rectangular building with gabled ends facing north and south. The main entrance is in the south gable, featuring a pair of doors recessed within a shallow pointed arch. The arch has moulded reveals and nook shafts, with a large window above, embellished with curvilinear tracery. Square gallery stair turrets flank the building, projecting outwards and turning into octagonal shapes above the eaves. These turrets have lancet windows and small, stone-faceted roof openings called lucarnes. Large windows with curvilinear tracery are located in the buttressed side walls. The roof is slate-covered, topped with a fleche ridge bell-cote. A contemporary hall is located to the rear of the church. The church remains in use as a place of worship. Advertisements for tenders appeared in the Inverness Courier in November 1888, and additional information can be found in Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae and through The Buildings of Scotland Research Unit.
