Description
The Highland Hotel, built in 1909-11 by J Russell Burnett of Cameron and Burnett, is a large, three-storey and attic hotel with a U-shaped plan. It was originally built for the Highland Railway Company. The front elevation facing southeast has twelve bays and features projecting two-bay angle towers that rise to steeply pitched roofs with dormers and finials. The upper level has a continuous balcony supported by a cast-iron balustrade. The exterior is largely harled, with timber framing in the attic story. A U-shaped courtyard to the rear includes a central entrance under a canopy, connecting the outer wings of the ‘U’. Windows are mainly bipartite or tripartite, with two panes of glass per sash. The roof is slate-covered, with corniced stacks at the ends. Dormers are present at both the front and rear. An advertisement for tenders appeared in the Inverness Courier on November 2, 1909.
