Description
A mid-18th century mansion, with additions and alterations throughout the 19th century, Uppat House is a rambling building. The main house is harled with ashlar margins and has two storeys and an attic, arranged in four unequal bays. A projecting, bowed porch is set off-centre to the south, with a side entrance, a front window and a bowed, piended roof, incorporating three piended dormers. Flanking wings, set back from the main house and connected by passage blocks, form a central courtyard. Each wing is single storey and attic, with two bays. A large two-storey and attic extension extends to the north and east. A three-storey angle drum tower with a conical roof and a tall weather-vane rises from the northeast corner. A further corniced entrance is located on the east face, accompanied by a corniced multi-light window to the right. Most windows feature 12 panes of glass. Corniced ridge and end stacks are present, and the roofs are covered in slate.
The original south entrance is marked by two pairs of square ashlar gate piers topped with ball finials. A central pair of carriage gates are made of cast iron, with matching pedestrian gates alongside. A low rubble wall, with terminal piers and plain cast-iron railing, links the gate piers.
Uppat House was formerly the home of James Loch, who served as Commissioner to the Sutherland and Stafford Estates from 1816 to 1855. The estate purchased Uppat House in 1812. Loch’s memorial is located within the grounds.
