Description
The James Loch Memorial, dated 1858, is a classical structure built of tooled sandstone ashlar. It features a shallow canopy supported by engaged Doric columns of polished granite, linked by a rounded headed arch with simple moulding and plain capitals at the impost level. The base of the columns is connected by a simple balustrade, with the entire structure resting on a rusticated plinth accessed by a short flight of steps on the north side. The memorial is topped with a shallow pyramidal roof and a ball finial. A plaque is inscribed to James Loch (1780-1855), who was Commissioner of Sutherland and Stafford Estates from 1816 until his death, and quotes his affection for the site, noting he “loved this place” in the evening of his life. The site is now overgrown with trees, but previously offered panoramic views of Dunrobin Castle and the Moray Firth.
